Bah Humbug about the Olympics...GB only win in events that either other countries don't give a toss about, or ones in which many countries can't compete in as they are too expensive-cycling, yachting, shooting
.....yet going by the UK media, you'd think we ruled the fricking world again....it's pathetic and very, very sad....Yes, well done to the individuals concerned...but get a grip for Chrissakes...

I personally think I make rather nice lasagne from this supermarket's own mince (fresh not frozen of course).

I was hoping you wheel out the entire Royal Family, including the Pearly King and Queen, at you Limpics. I think we'll all be ready for a bit of 'knees up muvver brahn' by then.

>I was magnanimous with my blubbing and let rip good and proper when that weightlifter held up his gold medal next to the picture of his wife who died.

I'm *so* glad I wasn't alone in doing that.

Subject: why it rains more [ REPLY ]

It's very complicated - but it's about the heat of the surface of the ocean - which is to do with the cycles of water going from the bottom of the ocean to the top, which changes as the heat of the whole system rises. And this means that precipitation rises, which means more rain inland for us. Also many other factors have an affect, such as where you are etc. It seems colder for lots of reasons too, partly because of the cloud coverage - but as you will have noticed, it has managed to be both colder and muggier.
'Global warming' is a bit of a crap name for it, most scientists go for 'climate change', but even that doesn't really explain how inconsistent all the changes are. Anyway, suffice to say your friend was correct in saying that summers will be wetter. Also winters will be milder, and seasons will start and end in different places. And, as is just beginning to start, there will be more extreme weather events, such as the flooding last July.

I know someone will come back and say what I've put is wrong, because I've generalised grossly.
There are squillions of books and websites you can read on this, that will be much more accurate!

All this heavy rain makes me put on a coat, go for a walk, stand under a tree for shelter and smoke.

I love doing that - don't know why.

Typical Britain - can't even make its own weather and has to import it from abroad.

My understanding is that the rise in degrees will not only make summers hotter, but will also make winters colder and will wreak havoc with weather patterns. The Jet Stream patterns will change - in our case, it will possibly bring 20% more annual rainfall, but that will mean more flooding and erosion. So the same effect may be happening with the UK - change in the Jet Stream could mean a lot more storms directed your way!
